Special Education Teacher Responsibilities

Special education teachers work with children and students with varying disabilities. These disabilities can be physical, mental, emotional or learning. These teachers create and adapt lessons in subjects like math, writing, reading, and many more. Special education teachers also create Individualized Education Programs, assess students’ progress, supervise teaching assistants, and collaborate with other school professionals.

Special Education Teacher Requirements

The requirements to become a special education teacher are similar to those of becoming a general education teacher. At a minimum, special education teachers need a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, or another subject such as math or science. Every state requires public school educators to be licensed and certified. The specifics of these certifications vary by state, so make sure to check with your state's regulatory laws.

A supportive school district in the Lake Ariel, PA area is seeking an experienced full time Special Ed Teacher for the remaining school year. We are seeking a teacher who will be driven and excited to help their students succeed in school and with their peers. The chosen individual will be working with an elementary caseload. Typical working hours will be from 8am-3pm.

As a Special Education Teacher in this role, your primary responsibilities will include:

  1. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement IEPs for students with special needs. Ensure that IEP goals and objectives are appropriate, measurable, and aligned with state standards.

  2. Plan and deliver instruction tailored to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. Modify curriculum materials and teaching strategies to accommodate individual learning styles and abilities.

  3. Establish a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement, behavior management, and social-emotional development. Implement effective behavior intervention strategies and support students in developing self-regulation skills.

  4. Regularly assess and track students' progress towards their IEP goals. Use various assessment tools and strategies to gather data and inform instructional decisions. Prepare and present progress reports to parents, administrators, and the IEP team.

  5. Foster effective communication and collaboration with parents, general education teachers, support staff, and other stakeholders involved in the students' education. Attend and actively participate in team meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development activities.

  6. Provide direct instruction to students with special needs in both individual and small group settings. Utilize evidence-based instructional methods and assistive technology to promote academic growth and skill development.

Requirements for the Position:

  • Possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or a related field. Hold a valid PA Special Education Teaching license or be eligible for licensure 
  • Must hold or be eligible for PA clearances
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of special education laws, regulations, and best practices. Have knowledge of various disabilities and instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Display the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, including general education teachers, support staff, and administrators. Experience with multidisciplinary team collaboration, such as IEP meetings, is highly desirable.
