Special Education Teacher Responsibilities

Special education teachers work with children and students with varying disabilities. These disabilities can be physical, mental, emotional or learning. These teachers create and adapt lessons in subjects like math, writing, reading, and many more. Special education teachers also create Individualized Education Programs, assess students’ progress, supervise teaching assistants, and collaborate with other school professionals.

Special Education Teacher Requirements

The requirements to become a special education teacher are similar to those of becoming a general education teacher. At a minimum, special education teachers need a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, or another subject such as math or science. Every state requires public school educators to be licensed and certified. The specifics of these certifications vary by state, so make sure to check with your state's regulatory laws.

ProCare Therapy is currently seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher to join our team in Coventry, RI. We are looking for a Special Education Teacher who is enthusiastic, compassionate, and skilled in creating tailored learning experiences for students with diverse needs. The ideal candidate will have experience working with students with various disabilities, including but not limited to autism, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbances.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with special needs
  • Provide direct instruction and support to students both in individual and group settings
  • Collaborate with other members of the educational team, including parents, administrators, and support staff
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of student progress and services provided

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or related field
  • Rhode Island Special Education Teacher certification or eligibility
  • Experience working with students with disabilities preferred
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to adapt instruction to meet the individual needs of students
