Special Education Teacher Responsibilities

Special education teachers work with children and students with varying disabilities. These disabilities can be physical, mental, emotional or learning. These teachers create and adapt lessons in subjects like math, writing, reading, and many more. Special education teachers also create Individualized Education Programs, assess students’ progress, supervise teaching assistants, and collaborate with other school professionals.

Special Education Teacher Requirements

The requirements to become a special education teacher are similar to those of becoming a general education teacher. At a minimum, special education teachers need a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, or another subject such as math or science. Every state requires public school educators to be licensed and certified. The specifics of these certifications vary by state, so make sure to check with your state's regulatory laws.
