Special education teachers also create Individualized Education Programs, assess students’ progress, supervise teaching assistants, and collaborate with other school professionals.

Special Education Teacher Requirements

At a minimum, special education teachers need a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, or another subject such as math or science. Every state requires public school educators to be licensed and certified. The specifics of these certifications vary by state, so make sure to check with your state's regulatory laws.
