Special Education Teacher Responsibilities

Special education teachers work with children and students with varying disabilities. These disabilities can be physical, mental, emotional or learning. These teachers create and adapt lessons in subjects like math, writing, reading, and many more. Special education teachers also create Individualized Education Programs, assess students’ progress, supervise teaching assistants, and collaborate with other school professionals.

Special Education Teacher Requirements

The requirements to become a special education teacher are similar to those of becoming a general education teacher. At a minimum, special education teachers need a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, or another subject such as math or science. Every state requires public school educators to be licensed and certified. The specifics of these certifications vary by state, so make sure to check with your state's regulatory laws.

Special Education Teacher Job Outlook

Typically special education teachers make more on average than general education teachers. As for the future of the special education teacher job, between 2016 and 2026 there are expected to be 33,300 new jobs, which is roughly an 8% growth in the occupation.

Early Childhood Special Education Teacher Needed!

The Job:

We are looking for someone who can commit to working full time, ASAP until the end of the school year. This will be a mod/intensive middle school classroom but there are two non-intensive students who come in for some modified ELA when the other students aren’t in. So total case management is 4 students. There is an aide and a full time 1:1 nurse with one student

Qualifications Needed:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Special Education
  • Must at least have valid Ohio certifications for mod/intensive special education
  • Ability to work on-site
  • Prior teaching experience is always a plus!
