School Occupational Therapist & COTA Responsibilities

School occupational therapist and occupational therapy assistants (COTA) help children perform daily activities by focusing on a variety of sensory, physical, and cognitive skills. Occupational therapists and COTAs improve the well-being of children in schools by allowing them to socially and academically participate. Additionally, they promote self-care and work skills. Occupational therapists and COTAs work with other school professionals to create a modified plan of treatment that helps minimize obstacles to participate.

School Occupational Therapy & COTA Requirements

To become a school occupational therapist, you need to receive a bachelor’s degree, then a master’s degree, and finally receive licensing to work in your state. Taking and passing the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapists (NBCOT) is the first step you must take to become licensed. COTAs need to receive an associate’s degree from an accredited program before they take their NBCOT exam. After they receive licensure from the state, they can practice inside schools, as long as there is an occupational therapist present.

School Occupational Therapist Salary & Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2018 median pay for occupational therapists has increased over the years. The position itself is expected to see large growth of 24% between the year 2016 and 2026. This translates to 31,000 new opportunities, some of which are school-based occupational therapy jobs and COTA school jobs. Additionally, with the rise of technology in schools, telehealth occupational therapy jobs will become more prevalent.
