School Nurse Responsibilities

School nurses have similar responsibilities to those of nurses working in hospitals or outpatient facilities, but they operate inside a school instead. As a result, school nurses work entirely with children. Their main responsibilities are performing health screens, developing a plan for student care, overseeing immunizations or other infection control methods, and acting as a liaison between school staff and parents. Ultimately, the goal of a school nurse is to create a healthy learning environment for students.

School Nurse Requirements

The National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) requires that all school nurses have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Once they have their degree, they can then take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. While most schools prefer their school nurses have a four-year degree, some schools will hire licensed practical nurses (LPNs). Like most positions in the school environment, specific licensing and certification requirements vary state to state. Returning to school to receive a Master of Science in Nursing is another way to make your resume more competitive when you are applying for school nurse jobs.

We are currently accepting candidates for a full-time 1:1 Nurse position supporting a first-grade student in Homestead, PA. This assignment is available immediately until May 29th, with the possibility of renewal.

Position Details:

  • Role: Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Hours: 7:30 AM - 2:45 PM, Monday - Friday
  • Setting: 1:1 support for a first-grade student
  • Student Needs: Tracheostomy care, G-tube feeding, complex care (in-home nurse also present)
  • Classroom Environment: Tricky behaviors, resilience required while the district works on additional support

Requirements:

  • Active RN or LPN license in Pennsylvania
  • For LPNs: Specific training in tracheostomy and G-tube care is required
  • Ability to provide competent care for a medically complex student
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Patience and resilience in managing challenging behaviors
