Paraprofessional Duties

Paraprofessionals work in collaboration with a licensed teacher in a classroom setting. When teachers present new lessons or materials, paraprofessionals help reinforce what was taught in small group settings or individually to students. As a paraprofessional, teachers seek feedback from you on the progress of students and they may need you to assist in grading students' coursework. If you are a special education paraprofessional, you may be required to shadow a specific group of students throughout the day and to work with them and their teachers inside the classroom.

Paraprofessional Requirements

A majority of school districts require that paraprofessionals complete at minimum two years of education and that they obtain an associate’s degree. Some states and districts have an assessment certification that is required as well. Generally speaking, paraprofessionals need strong communication skills to discuss students’ progress with teachers and parents. Patience and resourcefulness are additional qualities that are important to possess.

Like many positions in the education and healthcare industry, paraprofessionals are expected to see an 8% growth in job openings and an increase in salary over the next 7 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job Description:

  • Full-Time Position

  • Monday - Friday

  • Location: San Rafael, CA

  • Caseload Details: Dependent on School Placement

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Support children during play and general activities in class and around the school, including those with mobility issues or behavioral problems. This may also involve helping with personal care needs such as toileting and eating.

  • Assist the special education teacher in organizing and preparing materials for the day, setting up the classroom, and going over education plans for the students.

  • Assist students with physical disabilities in the classroom with tasks such as moving around, sitting up, eating, or writing.

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education Obtained: High School Diploma

  • Reliable Transportation

  • Experience and Passion Working with Children

  • Ability to Pass a Drug Screening and Background Check
