Paraprofessional Duties

Paraprofessionals work in collaboration with a licensed teacher in a classroom setting. When teachers present new lessons or materials, paraprofessionals help reinforce what was taught in small group settings or individually to students. As a paraprofessional, teachers seek feedback from you on the progress of students and they may need you to assist in grading students' coursework. If you are a special education paraprofessional, you may be required to shadow a specific group of students throughout the day and to work with them and their teachers inside the classroom.

Paraprofessional Requirements

A majority of school districts require that paraprofessionals complete at minimum two years of education and that they obtain an associate’s degree. Some states and districts have an assessment certification that is required as well. Generally speaking, paraprofessionals need strong communication skills to discuss students’ progress with teachers and parents. Patience and resourcefulness are additional qualities that are important to possess.

  • Hours: Full-Time (30+ hours per week)
  • Hourly Rate: $20 per hour
  • Benefits:

Job Requirements:

  • Associates degree or higher, OR
  • Completion of 48 credits, OR
  • Possession of a special education paraeducator certificate
  • Candidates without the above qualifications may enroll to obtain the paraeducator certificate, with continued employment contingent upon certification
  • Completion of 10 modules for PA Paraprofessional Certification during onboarding if not already certified

Assignments:

  • Classroom assignments for teachers/related services will be known in late May
  • Paraeducator assignments will be known the week of orientation
  • Efforts will be made to place staff at a location closest to their home, though assignments may vary based on enrollment and student needs
