General Education Teacher Responsibilities

Becoming a teacher can be an extremely rewarding career. General Education Teachers make an impact on the lives of students everyday which is why it is such an attractive career to some. Teachers are responsible for creating lesson plans that instruct their students on math, social studies and everything in between. They work with school administrators and other school professionals on a daily basis. Teachers are responsible for tracking the progress of students, enforcing school policies, and preparing their pupils for county and state exams.

Some general education teachers choose to focus on specific fields of teaching that have additional responsibilities. For example, a general education teacher that focuses on reading would be considered a reading specialist. Their responsibilities would also include tasks that focus on helping students improve their reading skills. Another example would be a life skills teacher. In addition to general education responsibilities, life skills teachers would be responsible for helping students understand how to complete tasks like managing money, preparing food and filling out job applications.

General Education Teacher Requirements

Depending on the age of students you intend on teaching and which state you are looking to work in determines the level of education required to become a general educator. For example, some states only require a high school diploma and certification for preschool teachers. Most teachers receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or higher. Some states require you to actually specialize in an educational subject matter, such as history or science. All teachers are required to be licensed in the state they teach. On top of educational requirements for teachers, there are several soft skills that are equally as important. Having strong attributes in communicating, writing, and instructing make for exceptional teachers.
