Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)

Location: Fort Myer, FL

Term: 23-24 Academic Year (Multiple full-time openings)

Start Date: Immediate

End Date: June 3, 2024 (Potential for Renewal)

Position Overview: We are actively seeking competent Sign Language Interpreters (SLIs) to occupy several full-time roles for the 23-24 academic year in Fort Myer, FL. SLIs are pivotal in facilitating seamless communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, educators, and staff members. This position presents an enriching opportunity to bolster the educational achievements and inclusivity of students reliant on sign language as their primary means of interaction.

Responsibilities:

  • Accurately interpret sign language for deaf or hard-of-hearing students across various educational settings, including classrooms, extracurricular activities, and school events.
  • Effectively translate spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa to ensure clear and comprehensive communication.
  • Collaborate closely with teachers, administrators, and support personnel to guarantee that deaf or hard-of-hearing students have access to educational resources and a supportive learning milieu.
  • Cultivate positive rapport with students and motivate their active involvement in all facets of school life.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality and exhibit professionalism when engaging with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Remain abreast of current best practices and ethical guidelines in sign language interpretation through continuous professional development endeavors.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred certification as a sign language interpreter (e.g., RID certification).
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with a robust grasp of Deaf culture.
  • Prior experience in educational sign language interpretation is advantageous.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication aptitude.
  • Ability to adapt interpretation methods and techniques to accommodate the diverse needs of students and varying contexts.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, patience, and unwavering commitment to promoting inclusiveness and accessibility.
  • Successful completion of background screening and adherence to confidentiality protocols.
