Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)

Location: Fort Myer, FL

Term: 23-24 Academic Year (Multiple full-time positions available)

Start Date: Immediate

End Date: June 3, 2024 (Potential for Renewal)

Position Overview: We are actively seeking adept Sign Language Interpreters (SLIs) to occupy several full-time positions for the 23-24 academic year in Fort Myer, FL. SLIs are instrumental in facilitating effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, educators, and support staff. This role presents a rewarding opportunity to foster educational achievement and inclusivity for students who depend on sign language as their primary means of communication.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate sign language interpretation services for deaf or hard-of-hearing students during classroom instruction, extracurricular activities, and school events.
  • Translate spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa, ensuring clear and comprehensive communication.
  • Collaborate closely with teachers, administrators, and support personnel to ensure that deaf or hard-of-hearing students have access to educational resources and a supportive learning environment.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with students and encourage their active participation in all aspects of school life.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when interacting with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Stay informed about best practices and ethical standards in sign language interpretation through ongoing professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred certification as a sign language interpreter (e.g., RID certification).
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a strong understanding of Deaf culture.
  • Previous experience in educational sign language interpretation is advantageous.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt interpretation methods to meet the diverse needs of students and various contexts.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, patience, and commitment to promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Successful completion of background screening and adherence to confidentiality protocols.
