Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)

Location: Fort Myer, FL

Term: 23-24 School Year (Multiple full-time openings)

Start Date: ASAP

End Date: June 3, 2024 (with possibility of renewal for 24-25)

Position Overview: We are looking for skilled Sign Language Interpreters (SLIs) to fill multiple full-time positions for the 23-24 school year in Fort Myer, FL. SLIs are essential in facilitating communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, teachers, and staff members. This role presents an exciting opportunity to support the educational success and inclusion of students who rely on sign language as their primary mode of communication.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate sign language interpretation services for deaf or hard-of-hearing students during classroom activities, extracurricular events, and other school-related functions.
  • Translate spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa to ensure effective communication and understanding.
  • Collaborate closely with teachers, administrators, and support staff to ensure that deaf or hard-of-hearing students have access to educational materials and a supportive learning environment.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with students and encourage their active participation in all aspects of school life.
  • Uphold confidentiality and maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Stay updated on the latest best practices and ethical standards in sign language interpreting through ongoing professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred certification as a sign language interpreter (e.g., RID certification).
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a strong understanding of Deaf culture.
  • Previous experience working as a sign language interpreter in an educational setting is advantageous.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt interpretation techniques and strategies to meet the diverse needs of students and various situations.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, patience, and dedication to promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Successful completion of a background check and compliance with confidentiality requirements.
