What Does an Audiologist Do?

The main function of a school audiologist is to help diagnose, treat and prevent hearing and balance disorders for students of varying ages. Audiologists use a variety of methods to treat auditory disorders students may currently have or begin to develop. Not only are technical skills required, but audiologists must possess social, communication, and problem-solving skills. When audiologists work in a school setting, they are required to collaborate with other school-based professionals, teachers, and even the parents of their students. An Individualized Educational Plan, most commonly known as an IEP, will also be developed by an audiologist. The purpose of an IEP plan is to address a student’s hearing and balance diagnosis, as well as the recommended management and treatment method.

Audiologist Requirements

In order to practice as an audiologist, you must receive a Doctoral of Audiology degree. These doctorate programs typically allow you to choose an area of interest that you would like to specialize in. Programs include didactic course work, as well as clinical rotations and hands-on internships. Licensure varies by state, but every state requires that you receive an additional license on top of your Doctoral of Audiology. Make sure to check with your state’s audiology board for specific licensing requirements.

Audiologist Salary & Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of audiologists is expected to grow 21% between 2016 and 2026. There are high paying audiology jobs all across the country, but your yearly salary mostly depends on the setting and state you work in. So start your job search with ProCare Therapy today!
