Adapted Physical Education Jobs

As an adapted physical education teacher, you understand more than anyone the true importance of exercise and play. ProCare Therapy wants to work with professionals like you so you can continue to promote physical activity for children in need. We have partnered with school districts from coast to coast, opening doors for you to keep kids playing, learning, and staying active.

Adaptive Physical Education Responsibilities

Adaptive physical education teachers ensure their students receive physical education instruction that fits their capabilities. They do so by developing differentiated instruction and curricula that meet the individualized needs of students. As an adaptive PE teacher, your main goal is to empower students with motor competency, recreational play and physical fitness. The basic responsibilities of an Adaptive PE Teacher include developing IEP plans, implementing teaching methods and assessing students' motor capabilities.

Adaptive PE Teacher Requirements

The required certifications for providing adaptive physical education have been left up to the educational agencies of each state. Currently, there are only 14 states that require specific certification. However, the National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation has established a set of standards that all adaptive physical education professionals should possess. Additionally, the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) certification was created to ensure physical education professionals meet these standards. To sit for the APENS examination, professionals must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, a valid teaching license, and complete a 12-hour adapted physical education course.

All adapted physical education teachers should have strong communication skills. In addition to understanding physical activity, they need to be capable of demonstrating, implementing, and supervising it as well. Children tend to become overly excited in PE class and adaptive physical education teacher needs to be able to maintain structure and order among their students.

At ProCare, we help connect students around the country to talented adaptive physical education teachers like you every day. Check out the jobs we have available and apply now!
